Due to increasing numbers of out -eaters and the trend to earlier age of onset of diabetes in Taiwan, this study aims to explore the needs of out -eaters with diabetes and propose a mobi le service to help them manage diabetes by using contextual design approaches. Three out -eaters with diabetes were recruited as the subjects for contextual inquiry inte rviews. Then, four work models (flow model, sequence model, cultural model, and art ifact model) were adapted to organize the collected data from different contextual perspect ives. An interpretation session was conducted, four professional members in related fields were invited to add in di v id u al i n si gh t s o r ex p an d t h e r es ear ch er ’s un d er st an di n g f o r developing the new service. After the interpretation session, a concept of connecting restaurants and shops for the diabetes-friendly mobile service was proposed. Final ly, a prototype of appl icat ion and a service blueprint were developed and evaluated by usabi li ty test and the in -depth interview. The results were as fol lows: 1. In f o rmati on t ech n o lo g y co u l d i n cr eas e s ub j ect ‘s wi ll ingness to control their diet 2. Subjects well accept the concept to include restaurants and shops in the diabetes -friendly mobile service to provide them adequate data on an ongoing real -time basis. 3. T h e f act o rs aff ect i n g p at i en t s’ wi ll i n gn es s o f co nt in ui n g disease management vary and are complex . Further study on this issue could shed some l ight on designing bet ter products and providing diabetes -friendly services.
